In addition, there are Institute of Further Education, Institute of Higher Technology, Institute of Vocational and Technical Education, Institute of E-Education, Women's College, Institute of Automobile Marketing and Sino-German Institute which is authorized by Chinese and German governments to run postgraduate courses. There are also three university hospitals located in different campuses.
The university now registers over 41,000 students at all levels from certificate and diploma courses to Bachelors Degrees, Masters, PhD programs and post doctoral attachments. There are over 4200 academic staff for teaching and/or research, among whom there are 6 Members of Chinese Academy of Science, 7 Members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 530 professors and 1300 associate professors. The university offers diverse courses in its 81 Bachelors Degrees, 151 Masters, 58 PhD programs and 13 post doctoral mobile stations. As one of the state leading centers for scientific research, the university has 5 state key-laboratories and engineering research centers.
The Institute of Underground Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering at Tongji University was established in 1958. It is one of the first institutes engaged in the teaching and research on underground engineering in China. Integrating the traditional superior disciplines in the field of civil engineering such as structural engineering (underground structure), geotechnical engineering and geological engineering, the institute boasts a long history, strong comprehensive strength and remarkable professional peculiarity at the University. It enjoys great prestige both local and oversea for its outstanding performance in academics and practices. Professional talents it produced are now working all over the world.

Institute for mechanics of materials and structures
Vienna University of Technology
The Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna) is located in the heart of Europe, in a cosmopolitan city of great cultural diversity. For nearly 200 years, the TU Vienna has been a place of research, teaching and learning in the service of progress. The TU Vienna is among the 10 most successful technical universities in Europe and is Austria’s largest scientific-technical research and educational institution. With its eight faculties - mathematics and geo-information, physics, technical chemistry, informatics, civil engineering, architecture and regional planning, mechanical engineering and business science, electrical engineering and information technology – the Vienna University of Technology covers the classic engineering disciplines.
The TU Vienna has a great pool of specialists who are acting in a wide range of different topics in research, teaching and as partners of the economy. More than 2000 scientists do their research and teaching at highly advanced and modern institutes – in summary about 70. Although fundamental research has priority at the TU Vienna applied research is also done. Moreover services are offered as high-tech problem solving and examination expertise for industry and economy. Innovation orientated companies are highly interested in co-operating with the Vienna University of Technology because of its high-tech and high-quality research and its openness for requests of the economy. The Vienna University of Technology puts great emphasis on co-operation between its own institutes as well as with other universities. Therefore the TU Vienna participates in several European Union (EU) and other research programs.
The research work at the Institute for mechanics of materials and structures is characterized by a synthesis of experimental investigation and numerical modeling of the mechanical behavior of materials at different length scales, and by the application of the developed constitutive models to structural analysis. Problems within the field of the theory of solid and deformable bodies are treated. For that purpose analytical and numerical techniques (finite element method, boundary element method, and hybrid techniques) as well as experimental methods for deformation analysis are used. |
